Couples Therapy

I offer a dedicated space for you and your partner to strengthen your relationship, enhance communication, and address any challenges you are facing together. Whether you’re struggling with conflict, trust issues, or emotional disconnect, couples therapy can help you rebuild a healthy, fulfilling bond.

In our sessions, I will work with you both to better understand each other’s perspectives, develop healthier communication patterns, and rebuild or enhance your relationship. If it becomes clear that parting ways is the healthiest option, I can also help partners navigate the end of their relationship with respect and understanding.

What I can help with

Couples therapy can assist with a wide range of issues that can affect the health of a relationship, including:

•  Communication: Learn to express your thoughts and feelings more effectively and listen empathetically to your partner.

•  Infidelity: Rebuild trust and intimacy following a betrayal.

•  Sexual difficulties: Rekindle emotional and physical closeness, improving your connection on both levels.

•  Work Stress: Address the effects of professional stress on your relationship and learn to support each other better.

Household Responsibilities: Work through disagreements over household chores and balance domestic roles more fairly.

•  Parental Burnout: Cope with the stress and exhaustion that comes with parenting, fostering teamwork and mutual support.

Violence: Establish safety in the relationship and address underlying causes of aggression or control. Note: if you feel in imminent danger or are concerned for someone else, call 999 (UK), 112 (Europe), 15 (SAMU France), 17 (Police France).

Goals of Couples Therapy

The primary goal is to relieve distress and improve your relationship by helping each partner express themselves openly and respectfully. I aim to enhance communication, emotional connection, and overall satisfaction in the relationship. If necessary, I can also help partners part ways thoughtfully and amicably. Couples therapy promotes compassion and constructive handling of emotions, creating a healthier dynamic for your relationship.

Why Does Couples Therapy Work?

Couples therapy is successful because it shifts the focus away from mutual blame and instead encourages both partners to work together against the problem. This change in perspective can be transformative, helping couples see their issues as shared dynamics rather than individual faults. Here’s how it works:

Addressing the Core Issues Together

I guide you and your partner to team up against the problem instead of blaming each other. By reframing the challenge as something you face together, it fosters collaboration and empathy.

Breaking Negative Patterns

Therapy helps identify and disrupt unhelpful patterns in communication and behaviour, allowing you to replace them with more positive interactions.

Creating Space for Deeper Listening

I help slow down conversations, giving each partner the chance to fully express their feelings and needs. This allows for greater empathy and deeper understanding.

The Role of Individual Sessions in Couples Therapy

Individual sessions provide an opportunity for each partner to explore personal thoughts and feelings without the pressure of the other being present. This can lead to important insights and self-awareness that enrich the joint sessions. These individual reflections help both partners bring greater clarity and understanding to the shared work, making the therapy process more effective overall.

An Individualised Approach

I offer a balanced and individualised approach, integrating person-centred, cognitive-behavioural, and systemic methods to fit your specific needs. Our sessions will focus on understanding and breaking harmful interaction patterns, promoting healthier communication and emotional connection. The initial assessment usually takes place over three sessions, allowing us to thoroughly evaluate your relationship dynamics and set clear goals for your therapeutic journey.

By respecting each person’s individuality while fostering a stronger, healthier relationship, couples therapy can lead to lasting, positive change.
